Luggage Bags and Packs
-
I’m trying to figure out what bags to take for Japan trip. Original plan was samsonite spinner cabin and lightweight backpack, but now I’m wondering about one larger carry on backpack for the way there and buy a cheap checked bag on the way back to bring purchases. For those who have been there, we are taking trains to change hotels four times in addition to the two airport journeys, so your advice is appreciated. I used to be a big backpack traveller and then recently got a spinner and enjoyed it on my last trip, but saw a video about lots of stairs in Japan making a back pack easier. Thoughts?

Can you share your opinion on it after it has arrived G.?
Whilst I wait for mine, here is a pretty good review. Some of the stuff he does not like about it, I can retro fix. But all in all a very positive review

@chrisjohnnick uhhh it’s called patina
Well, yea, but it just hurts so much to get that first scratch on it myself! Now, if I bought it used and it came that way...
Also, on a related note: A very well-worn Emil Erwin brown messenger bag popped up on the local Nashville marketplace. Wish I was into messenger bags more!

@Giles I have the Blitz and it’s a great quality backpack for the price point. The side laptop access is great and the zippers and pulls are all very well made.
Give it hell.

I recently bought the Trakke Bannoch, and love the story and ethics of the company, and the quality of the pack. Also: unlike Codura backpacks you get real patina with the waxed canvas (it ages nicely). I now realized that most days I need a bit more space and looking at the Bannoch Pro....

@Giles always room for one more

@mclaincausey can be back me up ok this but Rofmia has some of the most beautiful bags and packaging in the business. This is their “large” leather sacoche bag and it is everything Rofmia is about: quality, beauty, and simplicity.
It will prob be mostly a drop in bag for me but the price is right and if I dont use it, I know my wife will.

Got a lead on a Goruck Carryology 21L dyneema. Would y’all say that’s a better bag than the standard black cordura 21L Goruck?
-
Goruck is having a sale right now. With their lifetime scars guarantee pick your material of choice. Same bag. They will repair or replace if needed.
-
The only 21L Gr1's on sale are the hot pink and the allegiance flag. I'm not man enough for the pink, and not patriotic enough for the flag.
-
There were more options when the sale started. I’m surprised the allegiance flag still has inventory. Understand why the pink is still available.

Decided this year to upgrade both my luggage and bag for work travel. Decided on the AER travel pak 3 and a Rimowa cabin plus. I had actually wanted both for many years and finally decided it was time. I was able to check both out in boutiques in NY before I pulled the trigger. Both pair very good and are so far great travel companions
The funny thing about the Aer was I brought a few pairs of non denim to get hemmed at SE only to find out they don’t do non denim. As I was walking back to meet up with my family already sick of carrying the pants I stopped for the light to change looked up and saw the aer boutique totally an accident find. But perfect timing walked in and checked them out. Much better than the paper bag I was previously carrying them around in

@Anesthetist dude that is gorgeous. They’re my favorite bag maker. I’d love one of their leather coats.
TL;DR before I sing their praises there is a drop schedule at the bottom of this post if anyone wants a Rofmia.
They’re just so thoughtfully designed and meticulously crafted. Perfect urban bags. You wouldn’t want to use them for any excessively rough pursuits but perfect for work and travel for me. Extremely water resistant. Not seam sealed but it would take a remarkable deluge to penetrate them.
I have the Daypack V2 which I use as a work laptop bag and the Backpack V2 which I use as a gym bag or a work laptop or travel bag when I need more capacity.
I have a couple of their attachments that I place on whichever bag I’m using. One that is a chest pouch that attaches to the Fidlock-secured chest strap, and another that’s good for cell phones or sunglasses (the dyneema is lines with a soft neoprene-like material so it’s safe for lenses) that attaches to the shoulder straps and has an awesome Fidlock secured flap for easy one handed operation, and an aqua guard zippered pocket. Both of these accessories come with lanyards so they can also be used independently. So sometimes if I just want a place for my sunnies I’ll just wear the sunglasses pouch around my neck. Can place cash, cards, lends wipes, etc in the zippered pocket.
The thoughtfulness and modularity of what they do is on an Acronym level but perhaps even more practical and pragmatic (and less gimmicky).
If you’re interested in getting of these extremely rare and hard to acquire bags here is the release schedule. You have to be Johnny on the spot when they drop because this is like two people turning out a few of these at a time:
16 Nov 0:00 Daypack V2 M
Mid-December Daypack V2 L
January Backpack V2
Feb Dayneema Leather Daypack V2 M -
Picked up a used Goruck GR1, the older version that is full 1000D cordura. It’s in near mint condition. Excited to finally have one!
