Re: furlough
-
unless you already have an outside activity form and have permission from your agency, it is not allowed to seek outside employment during furlough. Sometimes they look the other way, but it's the exception not the rule. So no Uber nor Lyft. If you didn't already get the approval, you cannot find an alternative source of income. You are trapped because you are not getting paid and cannot do anything to get money.
-
each and every time there is a furlough, a bill must be created and pass through the Senate, the House and the White House for federal employees to get back pay. The latest bill guarantees back pay for every furlough, this is the first time such a bill was created. It passed through the Senate unanimously, the House 411-7, and is waiting for Executive signature.

working during furlough is a little complicated. When you are an exempted employee, the government will tell you what specific tasks you are allowed to work on during the shutdown. You must itemize your time during that time. This may be a regular 8 hour day, this may be a 4 or a 2 hour day. You are promised to get paid back for that time whenever the shutdown ends. In the meantime, no paycheck.

So sort of like a Che Guevara type?
I guess you could say that. Of course it was all about religion really, but it was a also about resistance to oppression as well.
I guess I meant that more in the sense that Che Guevara is a symbol of anti-establishment and considered a folk hero/resistance leader type in certain crowds as you said Guy Fawkes was with the people you were associated with back in the day. I didn't necessarily mean that the two men themselves and their mission/stories were alike but upon some further googling and based off of your statement I guess they do have some commonalities like you said.

Thanks.
The President just signed off on the bill, so we are guaranteed to be paid during a shutdown, whether we have to work through furlough or not. This new bill ensures that we will be paid for all future furloughs without a new bill being drawn up. Essentially it's "blanket back pay".
In reality, this furlough has got me double dipping. I'm not allowed to work on stuff for my agency, but when the shutdown is over, I get paid my full time salary. I do consulting work on the side, so my part time job is now my full time job.
My situation is few and far between. I've been doing consulting for years, and have had the preapproval going into the furlough.

Good for you @DougNg ! Glad to hear about the bill, that should be all over the news.
-
I don't know if you read the fine print of the new bill that passed for Fed employees, but you can use sick and annual leave if you are an exempted employee during a furlough for this furlough and any future shutdowns. So no more going AWOL during a furlough. May be worth passing along to your wife.

Canada Goose…
Worth the dosh? Overrated?
Recommend and better or similar quality brands for less $$$?
Overrated imho. I used to have a CG vest but sold it because of the stigma attached to the brand. It’s jokingly referred to as Canada Douche, which doesn’t help. Brand image aside, their down parkas are supposed to be incredibly warm so take my comment with a grain of salt. Last I heard CG was taken over by Bain Capital a few yrs back and then their prices shot way up.

Fwiw, I recently bought a Patagonia down jacket for milder temps. I like the company’s mission statement and their commitment to the environment. Unless you’re going to the Arctic you won’t need a heavy duty parka imo

The wife wants a parka… She's sees my wardrobe, she's been to Gosport a few times now, she's talked to Haraki san... She's grown tired of needing a new coat every year, because they either fall apart, or go out of style.
We tried to get her into an IH piece, but at 5'0" tall, she was still downing in an XS.
And, though we're only in England, she THINKS we're in the Arctic, lol

Hey @UnTucked
Canada Goose have excellent styling and real coyote hood linings. They look fantastic on ladies IMO.
That said, we shopped Canada Goose, Moncler, and all the other upmarket down jackets for my wife and ultimately settled on a Marmot, specifically the Montreal: https://www.amazon.com/Marmot-78570-Womens-Montreal-Coat/dp/B076ZK79L2
It is an excellent coat, flattering, and she absolutely loves it. Furthermore, it doesn't attract unwanted attention and if it were to disappear at a coat check or one of the dogs were to rip the face fabric jumping on her, it's not the end of the world.
Granted, not a parka, but an excellent option for a lady wanting to stay warm.

Canada goose seems to be the current thing on everyone in the U.K at the moment. I find it hard to believe that all these people are dropping that amount cash on a jacket. So leaves me to be believed they are being faked.
I dunno what your budget is but have you looked a Visvim valdez?

Have you looked at Uniqlo seamless down? They have seems, so not sure about the name. For the price they can’t be beat. My wife just got one and after my mom saw it, she got one as well. Not sure how long they will last, but so far so good.
