Changes to The Marketplace

Really good question: necroposting old dormant threads just to reach 20 posts is what I’m currently addressing. Some of the last 20 posts have been topics not touched since 2017.
I don’t mind bringing up old product threads if the discussion is interesting or insightful, but bringing up what fragrances you wear for the sake of reaching 20 posts is pushing it. Especially if it’s a list just to make a post. If some effort was put into a post addressing the (who, what, when, where, why, how) would get a little more leniency.
I feel like that isn’t fair. At least they found the fragrance thread? How else is one supposed to contribute?

I agree unless someone is being a jerk, right?

The difference is when someone posts asinine comments on 10 different threads in the space of 30 mins then admits during pm that it is a refined effort at shitposting in order to drop out and just use the Marketplace, as it is still low value posting with no benefit to the community, in order to circumvent an entirely fair and reasonable requirement by those that run this forum.
And that is the longest sentence I ever wrote.

That’s not even close to your longest sentence, and you know it [emoji8].
I said this same thing in a PM to Dennis, but it bears mentioning in mixed company also:
I agree that it’s annoying cluttering the 3 year old “welcome” thread because folks are not even looking at the time stamps when they necrobump weird random shit.
BUT, I do think we are going to have to grin and bear a certain amount of people churning out posts just to rack up their 20. Posting “high life is my favorite beer” because they’ve only read the title of the beer thread but not read any of the contents, etc. That’s just going to be the name of the game if we require people to engage with the forum in order to be able to see the sales boards.
There’s always been some boring surface level engagement with our discussions—it’s a message board on the internet, after all. I often don’t have much to say beyond, “I like that!” or “that was fun!” with a surfeit of exclamation points, and truthfully at the beginning some of the old timers didn’t take to the limited amount I brought to the table. I grew on the place as it has grown on me, and I think this 20 posts thing is making the best of what we’ve got, but we have to allow folks to offer up what they are willing and not be judgy dicks about what they bring—even if it’s the bare minimum.
Was that enough run-on sentence word salad for ya?

I agree as well @sabergirl. And I think that is what has been happening. The example given was quite an extreme one.

As a newcomer - has this already been implemented? I can see the marketplace but I have less than 20 posts, I don't want to break any rules by posting before I'm technically allowed!

There’s a mechanism in place whereby people below a certain rank should not be able to post on the Buying and Selling, Stuff to Trade or Want to Buy boards.

How about 20 posts AND 1 month as a member. Maybe that would cut down on the necroposting [emoji6].
I rarely use the buy and sell boards so what goes on there doesn’t really affect me. But the spamming and necroposting in other threads does.
