Extinct section is extinct
-
I am dismayed to discover that the “Extinct” item section of the IH website is gone. Did anyone else use this as much as I did? It was so nice to be able to quickly locate items, their numbers, and measurements. The older forum threads often don’t have measurements at all, or they’re buried in pages of broken picture links.
I already sent an email to IHUK, but I’m wondering if anyone else will miss this feature?

We absolutely love the extinct section, and it was originally my idea, so it is close to my heart.
BUT, it has become a complete nightmare to maintain, screws up response times, eats resources like a Sumo wrestler and will only get worse as time goes by.
We are trying to work out what we do in a way that does not fuck up the shop, which is sort of our raison d'etre.

@sabergirl I noticed this too and definitely used it to check out extinct items that I sometimes come across in the buying and selling section here and other online sellers. Even when I'm bored and want to learn about extinct products, I loved that resource.

Seems like it would be incredibly time consuming to try to copy the measurements into beginning of the forum threads, so that’s probably a non-starter.
Thanks for responding, Giles. It certainly was a huge number of products, so even though I have almost no clue how websites work, I can imagine it used a fair amount of resources.

I noticed yesterday while updating my sales page as I usually link to the relevant page.
Will surely be missed. -
I also miss it

A lot of times it's used as fodder for the curious. I've seen someone post a shirt I hadn't seen in the past on waywt, and I proceed to go through the forum page of that shirt to see some history.
buy/sell is another sub-forum that is a seed for the extinct pages. If you want more info on an item for sale, you can go through those pages to see fit pics, go through history on sizing, etc.
Neither of the reasons I described make Iron Heart money, and it sounds like maintaining it costs IH labor, so there has to be a better reason for it.
I for one, browsed those older pages frequently when something came up for sale and have been stonewalled the last couple weeks. I didn't think to mention it because who am I to rock the boat?

I consider "Rock the Boat" to be my daughter's theme song–true story @goosehd
I think that Extinct just needs a little love not to chew so many cycles. The paging should be limited so that it is not possible to load hundreds of images on a page, for example. The rub there is balancing that against encouraging excessive clicks–what's the sweet spot? Maybe it could be broken down into a directory structure by release year, category of good, material, item number (e.g., IHSH-01 to IHSH-25 becomes a page, and so on) or some other organizing principle(s) and be a simple tree to navigate and search. Maybe it could be offloaded to a blogging platform.
I think it is an important "museum" and should live on in some form, even if you have to sacrifice usability a bit.
